Months of preparation and high anticipation came down to one day and when it did come it flew by before our very own eyes. Saturday, January 21, 2012 is so remembered and deeply ingrained in the minds of many people, and for a good reason. SPEAKout Poetry for the first time in its three years of existence brought its spoken word poetry slam to Hamilton. This event in collaboration with Cordoba House was hosted at the Art Gallery of Hamilton’s Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Pavilion. The day started with beams of glorious winter sunlight bathing the gallery’s walls and casting shadows across rare editions of paintings, photographs, illustrations, sculptures, each one a reminder of how art still enthralls. People took advantage of the pleasant weather and came from as far as Ottawa, London, Guelph, east-end Toronto and Kingston. Not more than a 20 minute drive from downtown Hamilton, there is a monthly poetry slam happening in Burlington, Ontario. Actively promoting outspoken poetics for more than 3 years running, the Burlington Slam Project takes place every third Thursday of each month. The Burlington Slam Project is a poetry slam series that guarantees a cash prize for the winner and a special feature artist each month for the audience. Always seeking new voices to expand its community, every year this project sends a team to National and International events. Through providing its performers with spoken word arts platform, the Burlington Slam Project is building a network of diverse and talented local artists.
