Changing Gears

If you have been following SPEAKout Poetry lately, you know that a lot of changes have been happening. The team has been busy working with a new set of updates. We have some news, which is regarding Ideas Worth Rhyming (IWR). IWR is SPEAKout’s joint effort with National Youth Arts Week (NYAW) aimed for early May. Given that we are nearing the end of March and with less than two months left, SPEAKout has been having second thoughts about executing IWR in such short notice. Of course, this team firmly believes that we can make IWR happen. However, given the limited time frame an event of such ambitious scope would not fit in for the first week in May. Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Shihan: The Poet. A native of New York City, Shihan rose to fame in HBO’s Def Poetry Jam. Nowadays, Shihan resides in California where he is the co-host of Da’ Poetry Lounge, the largest open mic night held in United States. Ideas Worth Rhyming

Many of you have been wondering what SPEAKout Poetry has been up to since the conclusion of our last poetry slam in Hamilton. This may come as a surprise but since last fall the brains behind this organization have been working tirelessly on SPEAKout’s next venture. The next event will see SPEAKout in a whole new light different from its founding tradition of slam competitions of the last three years. In Summer 2011, SPEAKout became inspired by several different things but mainly “Ideas Worth Spreading,” a motto of TED. As a nonprofit based conference, TED brings people from three distinct yet intertwined worlds of Technology, Entertainment and Design. With that in mind on May 5th, 2012, SPEAKout will be presenting a new branch of its organization. This unique side of SPEAKout will be an ambitious weeklong project coming to Toronto in partnership with the National Youth Arts Week, a nationwide weeklong arts event. Read More
